Mental Health Counselor Training Program
In Association With Capella University
Capella University is KCREP accredited and has high expectations for its graduates. Classes are online except for one week intensive colloquiums which involve face to face and hands on experience. The University provides many opportunities for interaction between students and faculty.
Therapy can be very powerful and can change lives. It is therefore imperative that therapists receive quality supervision especially during their training. As part of most therapy related master’s programs it is therefore required that students have practicums or internships under licensed counselors. Even upon graduation from an accredited institution, Florida State requires two years post graduate supervision and a written test before issuing a license.
Steve Steiner, LCSW has taken on the role for Comprehensive MedPsych Systems as the Director of Mental Health Counseling Training. He has developed a learning curriculum that includes individual, family and group psychotherapy work. During their practicum supervised training, students are required to have weekly supervision with staff. They discuss clients with other fellow graduate students, Comprehensive MedPsych Systems clinical staff, and professors (maintaining strict confidentiality standards), and are up to date on the latest treatment approaches and therapeutic techniques.
One of the benefits of this training program is that is allows patients with limited financial resources to receive therapy at reduced rates or on a sliding fee scale. By utilizing graduate students under licensed supervision, we are able to provide quality service at reduced cost and reach a population who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to get help.
Steve Steiner is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has worked with children, adults, and families for over 30 years. He specializes in play therapy and family therapy but has helped individuals and marriages as well. In fact, Steve was featured in the “Can this marriage be saved?” portion of the Ladies Home Journal. Steve has extensive experience working with abused children and their families as well as divorce, and has testified as an expert witness. Although he maintains a large and varied caseload at Comprehensive MedPsych Systems, he also enjoys sharing his knowledge and expertise and has supervised graduate students from USF, Argosy, and most recently Capella University.
