Dr. Geoffrey Kanter, founder of Comprehensive MedPsych Systems, Inc. (CMPS) became Director of Psychology for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Sarasota after being recruited here from Northern California in 1991. He methodically started to build a staff of seven psychologists as well as a licensed mental health counselor to fill out his team.
In addition, he became Clinical Director for the Brain Injury Program, the Pediatric Program, and eventually, the Pain Management Program. Dr. Kanter left in In 1997 to start his own private practice.
That same year, he crafted a unique, expansive program of behavioral medicine services at Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) throughout in-patient medical units including: cardiac open-heart surgery, stroke/orthopedic rehabilitation, oncology, pediatrics, diabetes, and high-risk pregnancy. His team was praised by physicians, nursing staff and patients for its exceptional quality of service.
The Psychology Cardiac Protocol was a main factor in decreasing the length of stay of cardiac surgery patients by one full day. He also helped to develop a unique Special Care Attendant (1:1 Sitter) protocol involving psychology evaluation and intervention that documented $250,000 of savings to the hospital over a one-year time period.
The Psychology/Behavioral Medicine program gained national recognition when the Practice Directorate of the American Psychological Association sent representatives to survey the program on two different occasions.
SMH underwent deep budget cuts in late 1997, prompting Dr. Kanter to propose the creation of a private group designed for continued expansion of psychological and behavioral medicine services. In early 1998, Comprehensive MedPsych Systems (CMPS) was established, at which time, Dr. Kanter and a small team of psychologists provided full-time services to Sarasota Memorial Hospital medical in-patients.
The next several years saw the services by CMPS grow by leaps and bounds as it extended to outpatients as well. In 2000, CMPS moved out of SMH offices to Midtown Plaza, later purchasing a 10,000 square foot building at 1090 S. Tamiami Trail in 2015 when the office space was outgrown.
Offices were opened or expanded in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, North Port, Venice, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. CMPS acquired the largest practice in St. Augustine in 2014, which doubled in size by the end of the following year. In 2015, CMPS acquired the largest practice in Fort Myers, which also doubled in size by the end of that year. That same year saw the acquisition of a practice in Carmel, Indiana and offices in Fairhope and Mobile, Alabama.
In 2014, Comprehensive MedPsych Systems created a two-year postdoctoral neuropsychology residency training program recognized by the Academy of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology (AAPN).
Comprehensive MedPsych Systems now boasts more than 100 staff members. Clinical staff includes board-certified neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced-practice psychiatric nurses, post-doctoral neuropsychology residents, licensed mental health counselors, licensed clinical social workers, and Certified Addiction Professionals (CAP) providing services mostly in outpatient settings but also in inpatient settings including acute medical hospitals, a Level II Trauma unit, rehabilitation hospitals/units, and psychiatric hospitals/units.
